Government's Committment to Youth Playing Team Sports Print E-mail
The Government of Canada is Committed to Supporting Canadian Youth Playing Team Sports

The Government of Canada today announced support for young Canadians playing team sports. This support, announced by the Honourable Bal Gosal, Minister of State (Sport), on behalf of the Minister of Health, will help reduce the rate and severity of concussions and brain injuries and improve return-to-play decision-making for children and youth playing team sports.

“We want our children to be active, healthy and have fun while participating in team sports and physical activity. But we also want our children to be safe,” said Minister Gosal. “It is estimated that as many as 90% of severe brain injuries can be prevented. That’s why we are investing in projects to help ensure the safety of our children and youth while being active.”

"As professional coaches we know only too well the impacts that concussions have on athletes”, said Peter Lawless, ChPC, President of Coaches of Canada. “We applaud the Minister and his team for moving forward with such an important and timely initiative."

“We have seen a significant rise in awareness of concussions and their impact on the professional athlete's career and life after sport”, commented Wayne Parro, ChPC, Executive Director of Coaches of Canada. “This initiative is a meaningful step forward in helping athletes and parents at all levels of the sport and recreation system understand the complexities of returning to play after a head injury.”

52 Reasons To Be Active Print E-mail
52 Reasons to be Active - One for Each Week of the Year!

Did you know that even a single workout offers measurable health benefits? It’s true… so just imagine what a commitment to daily physical activity can do for your health! One of the most amazing things about exercise is that the benefits of a single workout are seen within hours of the workout itself, and last up to three days after the workout is completed. For example, a single session of aerobic exercise has been shown to reduce important risk factors for diabetes and heart disease such as triglyceride levels, and blood pressure and insulin resistance, while also increasing HDL cholesterol (the “good” cholesterol).

When it comes to your children’s health, there should be no compromise. Physical activity is essential for healthy growth and development and since half of it should come from active play, it adds up to a lot of fun too!
Today I’m sharing 52 reasons to be active throughout 2012 – that’s one for each week of the new year! Here we go…

1 – Physical activity helps people of all ages improve their overall health.

2 – Regular physical activity reduces your risk of heart disease.

3 – Children and teens that are physically active tend to perform better academically.

4 – Those who are physically active tend to feel happier.

5 – Exercise boosts self-confidence.

Leisure Centre Study Public Open House Print E-mail
The City of Lethbridge is currently engaging in a Leisure Centre Study.  The purpose of the study is to determine if there is a future need in the community for a leisure centre, and to examine what components could be included as a part of this type of facility. This study has been undertaken at the request of City Council after hearing from the community that there is a desire for a leisure centre to enhance quality of life opportunities within Lethbridge.

In the fall of 2011, Group2 Architecture of Red Deer, along with local firm Ferrari Westwood Babits Architects, were selected to lead the Study.   They have been working with City staff and stakeholder groups to learn about the needs in Lethbridge for a facility that would address different recreational and sport activities.  Group2 has been involved in many well known Leisure Centres built throughout the province such as Collicutt Centre in Red Deer and the Meadows Community Recreation Centre in Edmonton, plus members of the team worked on the University of Lethbridge’s  1st Choice Savings Centre for Health and Wellness.

Public Open Houses to share the preliminary findings and get feedback from the community will be held from 7 – 9 p.m. on Tuesday, January 31st at Nicholas Sheran School and on Wednesday, February 1st at City Hall.

A presentation will take place from 7-7:45 p.m. each night. There will be an opportunity for questions, to meet those involved and look in closer detail at the different components of the potential leisure centre immediately following each presentation. While this is only a study, the work done now will help guide the process should the City move forward in the future to build such a complex.   The final report from this study is expected to be presented to City Council in May 2012.

For those unable to attend the open houses, information will be shared on the City of Lethbridge website shortly after the open houses take place, and feedback and questions can be directed to Ashley Matthews at 403-320-3991.

Everyone is invited to attend and please share the flyer with anyone who might be interested
